Shihan Rocco Parrillo  1950-2009

Shihan Rocco Parrillo: Founder

"Shihan Rocco was the kindest and most patient person I have ever known. Every day I strive to make him proud by building the school that he started. I am a better person because of him, and I will pass that tradition on through my teaching."

- Sensei Dean Watts

Founded Rising Sun Jiu-Jitsu (then called "Parrillo's Jiu-Jitsu") in 1982.

Sensei Dean Watts - Owner, Head Instructor

Sensei Dean started training in 1999 at the age of 13.  Within a few years he started Assistant Instructing, and received his Black Belt in 2005.  By 2008 Sensei Dean was teaching all classes at the school. When Rocco Parrillo, owner and founder of Rising Sun, passed away in 2009, Sensei Dean was surprised to hear that Shihan Rocco had left the school to him.  Since then, he has been training in multiple martial arts including Isshinryu Karate, Judo, Okinawan Kobudo and weapons, and Tengu-ryu Kenjutsu (a form of Japanese swordsmanship.)

With training in English and Psychology, Sensei Dean put off finishing the teaching program at Rhode Island College to run the school full-time.
